II MA English

“ I would have slapped the person on the face, had something like this been said to me directly”, fumes Sayujya Sankar, 20, who got an unsolicited SMS on her mobile phone- a suggestive invitation for a late night chat. The rude SMS was just one among the thousands of unsolicited ones that pester mobile phone users across the country, beyond boundaries of age, sex, and network provider.

Unsolicited SMSes often appear as advertisements for a plethora of products and services, including matrimonials, chat rooms, employment opportunities, admissions, insurance and banking, travels, shopping offers, and almost everything under the sun. These uninvited annoyances assume larger and graver proportions when they get tinted with criminal intents and fraud. In other words, it’s encroachment upon private space, and amounts to throwing customer privacy up for grabs.

Subscribers are frequently bombarded with chat invitations and friend requests also, and find-a-friend schemes are common. A week-long tiff over a ‘misfired’ SMS amounted into violence and ended in the murder of a youth in Aluva, Kerala. An SMS meant for her boyfriend was allegedly sent to a random number by the network provider under their ‘find-friendship’ scheme, blames the girl, whose boyfriend murdered the person who had received the message and had started disturbing her.

Monu Rajan, a postgraduate student in Hyderabad, confirms that chat invitations are common. He receives them “once in a while”, but just ignores them. “They are annoying”, he says. But he frowns when he talks about the adult jokes and suggestive messages. “ They even sent messages asking if I would like to subscribe to an ‘adult jokes scheme’”, says the BSNL subscriber. The customer services departments fail miserably in stopping these unsolicited calls and SMSes, complain users of BSNL, Airtel, Vodafone, Tata, and other firms.

Fraud also plays big in the scheme of things. Mobile lotteries, branching out of the infamous online lotteries, almost always ask for customer account numbers, and other confidential information after ‘informing’ that the subscriber’s number has won a substantial amount in a ‘lucky draw’. Innocent victims still fall prey to these dirty schemes, and stand to lose.

A look into what is in it for the advertising firms reveals some unique advantages. It helps in cheap marketing and is effective, as most people read whatever message they get on their personal phone. There is a wider coverage to mobile marketing, as compared to television and internet. The best part is that the real identity of the sender could be easily masked. There is no way the receiver could be sure of the sender’s identity, as these bulk- SMSes are usually sent from websites which are more than obliging to take up the proxy ‘sending’ job, at relatively cheap rates. One of them, www.smsfreedom.com, even flashes on its home page: “Our gateways have features like different sender ID, scheduled SMS, least cost routing, and 2-way SMS”!

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), had taken measures in this regard, but poor promotion and ineffectiveness of the National Do Not Call Registry (NDNCR) makes it a choice best left out. In spite of a much-hyped launch last year, NDNCR, the primary objective of which is “to curb the Unsolicited Commercial Communication (UCC)”, has failed to meet requirements, as 80% of the Indian subscribers are still not registered. Those who did, complain of inefficient working and below-par satisfaction. Messaging by political parties does not come under commercial SMSes, and hence accounts for millions of unsolicited SMSes, leaving TRAI helpless on that front. Stricter rules, better promotion, and effective functioning alone can help stopping the circulation of unsolicited SMSes, which is nothing less than ‘trespassing’ into ‘private property’ of India’s millions of mobile phone users.

My Dirty Malayali FriendsSayujya Shanker

dirty It probably need not be stated (owing to the very title) that I have a lot of Malayalee friends. And by a lot, I mean that my whole life at UoH (almost) has been surrounded, influenced and affected by these vrithi ketta thendis (after all, they were the ones who taught me the language. I might as well use it! Just to impress them...) I came here not knowing a bit of Malayalam. And then there were my classmates!! I was surrounded by a continuous downpour/outpour of this beautiful language (and I am not sarcastic here). But I did not understand it. So I was left a little out of the loop.

However, after a lot of promise, a Malayalam movie (named Manichitrathazhu- which I accept is most definitely better than the Tamil remake), careful listening, a failed attempt at learning the script and spending my days 24X7 with them, I have finally managed to comprehend the easier parts of their conversations, and have proceeded to make a fool of myself attempting to sing their songs, and speak their language.

On the other hand, this lovely bunch of people has also managed to convert me into a partial Keralite: what with the Onam celebrations, and the constant teachings, and the patient listening and correction of my attempts at conversation. Whether I got their Malayalam or not, I got their ‘joks’ (for jokes) and their ‘parrticularrly miserabul’ (I cannot find the appropriate pronunciation in the English script, but I’m sure you know what I mean, and a stress on the ‘r’ for the first word) pronunciations. So, there you go, all my ‘lowley’ friends, you can boast of a partial convert amidst your crowd!

Thank You!!!
Mukkooti/മുക്കൂറ്റിhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07936671606485635980noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2715342084955166688.post-4105280113169651702010-09-22T21:10:00.000-07:002010-09-23T08:02:02.054-07:00ബലിക്കാക്കകള്Muhammad Aslam P
Varma.R
M.Phil Comparative Literature

Today in class, ma’am told us about the theorists’ recurring efforts to form an apt metaphor for the cultural diversity of America. Starting from the well-known ‘melting-pot’ to ‘mosaic’ and finally to the ‘rainbow’, they were dissatisfied. The proper one seemed elusive to their grip. Presently, they seem to have achieved a consensus on the idea of the ‘salad-bowl’, for the diverse vegetables constituting a salad don’t lose their individual identities, yet when they come together as salad, it’s even tastier.
It suddenly occurred to me that our case in HCU is no different. What are we? An admixture of different states, cultures, races, religions, castes and creeds. It’s a microcosmic India that we see here. Sharing the same classroom, hostel room, etc. we very hardly take into account any differences. We have, in a sense, acculturated ourselves with the rather pan-Indian milieu here. Yet, we don’t seem to like to forego our essential ethnic/regional identities here. We evoke Onam, Pongal and sundry other culture-specific festivals here onto this alien land and thus reiterate our essential Malayali-ness, Tamil-ness, etc. Nonetheless, we never forget to invite and include other students outside the specific communities to share the event. It’s like saying-‘Have a taste of our culture’; and further asking, ‘How do you feel?’
It is a perfect give and take here. Never is this an upholding of ‘regionalism’ or ‘parochialism’. It is, on the contrary, based on a broad consciousness that joy only multiplies on sharing, plus an opportunity-grabbed for the presentation of one’s cultural uniqueness.
For those who are on the brink of losing their specific cultural identities, this celebration throws up an option of ‘tracing their roots back’, by taking part in the ceremony. And for others who are already in close touch with their unique cultures, it is a perfect occasion to fantasize for a while that they are at their homes yet again! I believe it is moment of true elation for the academic diasporas here-recreating the quintessence of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, et al. at their doorsteps. And for a while, one lives only as a Keralite, Tamil, etc.
As it is said, it will be pretty boring if everyone plays the same orchestra. It is the combination of different instruments that makes it interesting and lively. So, let us play different tunes. It shan’t be cacophony, but rather the perfect euphony.

Mukkooti/മുക്കൂറ്റിhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07936671606485635980noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2715342084955166688.post-42573126121583973112010-09-22T12:29:00.000-07:002010-09-22T13:07:57.222-07:00Stilling the momentsAmal P Mathews
M.Phil English

You can call this anything; musings, meditations, ruminations, recollections, retrospection, well! It could go on...
Having being in UoH for two years and two months, one feels a curious emotion on thinking of one’s past in this milieu. A strange feeling fills the heart which is unnameable for the moment. The intention is not to compose a panegyric for this citadel of knowledge, rather it is an attempt to detail the minute yet tangible ways in which the place is and would be held very close to one’s heart.
The idea of a university has always held a special allure to one’s mind, right from the childhood days. Thought of as ‘this big place’ where everybody studies with a keenness unparalleled elsewhere and as the perfect locale where every mind is sharpened with insights. Trepidation was the sole feeling that reigned in my heart as I entered the portals of UoH. Had I not ventured to break through this film of feeling one wouldn’t have cherished the whole prospect as one actually did over the past two years. The first of its kind of hostel experience, the short stint in LH- 1 famed for its murky corridors and the shifting to the brand new LH-5 does not seem like a distant past.
Lessons in cycle riding under the tutelage of friends turned gurus, the inevitable ways in which one got lost in the campus, the tedious walks to the bank, in search of Kerala food to ‘Kairali’, another memorable discovery of the ‘mushroom rock’ on a Sunday evening- a collage of memories keep tumbling down from the interiors of mind when one searchingly probes the past. Not to speak of the larger-than-life professors in the department descending on us with their cerebral capacities. Storming into the departments for submissions, the sweaty palms and parched throat before a class presentation and the last minute brainstorms before the exams have all painted a portrait unique to each one of us. The watching of the sun dipping beyond the horizon from the sunset peak (the vision is presently obliterated due to the maniacal developmental projects), the cracking of dawn from the casements of reading room, the relishing of Irani tea with the quintessential samosas, the disappointed faces before a dysfunctional ATM have all been lived through in the bygone days.
Indeed the place holds a charm of its own which is felt in each of us, like the heart that skips a beat on sighting the nature at its best, all green and alive, as one re-enters the university after the summer hols. But what really makes UoH dear to me is the abundant bunch of faces which greets one in every corner. Faces lined with anxiety, nonchalance, spontaneous smiles, a tinge of sadness, eyes aglow with mirth- it differs. Each of them unfailingly strikes a resonance in unseen ways with the individual that you are. The vibrancy of youth extolling their varied legacies yet united in the single pursuit of excellence. The harmonious spirit pervading amidst the tensions and toils of student life. Life is indeed worth living amongst them- the assuring eyes, uplifting words and enlivening gestures.
Mukkooti/മുക്കൂറ്റിhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07936671606485635980noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2715342084955166688.post-65782928037161743842010-09-22T12:26:00.000-07:002010-09-22T13:07:57.226-07:00‘Regionalism’, ‘Regional’ and Cultural Programmes-some scattered thoughtsSreejith K.K

PhD Philosophy

It seems that the word ‘regional’ is often treated with a derogatory sense. Is there a unique aspect which makes one a member of a particular nation or a class of humans? Is such a unique aspect which is shared by all (I would call this ‘unique aspect shared’, ‘essence’) a necessary condition for us to have a nation or a class called human in a meaningful sense? I tend to think that it is not.

The cultural scenario of India is a myriad of cultural differences. Despite all these differences, is there any aspect which is shared by all Indians (‘Indianness’) that will identify them as Indian? It seems to me that there does not exist any ‘essence’ and what exists is a mere family resemblance.

Let us try to understand the notion of family resemblance, a concept introduced by Ludwig Wittgenstein. Wittgenstein talks about the example of a game. As we know, there are various games. By ‘game’ one can mean, ‘board game’, ‘card game’, ‘ball game’, ‘olympic game’and so on. Now the question is: what is common to them all? One might be tempted to say that there must be something common; otherwise they would not have been called as ‘games’. Wittgenstein’s suggestion is that if you look at all these games, you will not see anything common to all. Instead one will only see a whole series of similarities and relationships. Look for example at board-games. Now pass on to card-games; here you find many similarities with the first group, but many common features drop out and others appear. When we pass on to ball-games, much that is common is retained and many are lost. Compare chess with naught and crosses. Is it the case that all the games involve ‘winning’ and ‘loosing’ or competition between players? In ball games there is winning and losing but when a child throws a ball at the wall and catches it again, this feature disappears. There is a difference that is being played by skills and luck in various games. There is a difference between the skills in chess and that in tennis. From an examination of the above kind, Wittgenstein comments a complicated network of similarities and criss-crossings. These similarities are sometimes overall and at times similarities of detail.

Just as there is no essential aspect which makes all these activities (belonging to the class of) ‘games’, there need not be any essential aspect which makes all of us (to belong to the class of) Indian or even (to belong to the class of) human. Since our campus community can be considered as a cross section of our nation, a similar line of thought may be applicable to this as well. One might tend to think that in a campus community such as that of HCU’s - where the cultural diversity of India is very much represented – one should perform only those cultural programmes which are having some common elements. I am afraid that one may not be able to find any ‘essential’/ ‘common’ aspect of that sort. But is it a problem? One might argue that just as in the case of ‘games’ not having a common aspect, poses little problem for a variety of activities to be called as games, the fact that not having a common aspect need not be a problem for considering different cultural programmes as ours. Because even if there does not exist an essence, there are family resemblances between different cultures. ‘Knowledge of other culture’ is an interesting philosophical debate; but it is a truism and is a matter of intuition that we pretty much understand as ‘other’ culture. Therefore one might argue that the “othering” involved here is a problematic move. If one argues that at a central university, what is desirable is not ‘regional programmes’ but ‘national programmes’, the argument seems to presuppose a kind of ‘essentialism’, the idea that there is some common/essential aspect which is running through all the different cultures of the country. As I have tried to demonstrate above, this kind of a presupposition may be ambiguous. One might also want to ask the following question: is there a Nation over and above the regions; or are regions constitutive of a Nation?

None of the above arguments pretend to establish that ‘regional programmes’ will never lead to regionalism. Rather what it tries to show is that it need not do so. Suppose that in the meeting of a cultural/linguistic community of ‘X’ if one makes statements which have the implication that ‘I value a particular person since (s)he belongs to ‘X’’; it need not be stated that it is a statement which is pregnant with regionalism. What is funny is that in most of the cases when people make such statements filled with overtones of regionalism, they will begin by saying that “I am not being a regionalist”. One might want to think whether they want to be encapsulated inside the cocoon of their own cultural/linguistic community as it can often be seen in our campus. Will a decision of barring cultural programmes in the campus helps to prevent narrow-mindedness or encapsulations inside the cocoon of one’s own linguistic/cultural community? One might think that it is very unlikely.

But what is problematic about disowning any regional/cultural dimensions and trying to ‘fit in to’ an abstract notion called “Indian culture” (or any similar kind of national culture) is that it makes the diversity to disappear; and it will project one aspect of a country as “the” aspect of it. We can see that a similar kind of phenomenon is occurring in the case of a craving to become a global citizen too. We should not forget that these are not only moves where aesthetics (of diversity) are at stake but also a political move with detrimental and devastating implications.
